Dictionary of symbols or intuitive reading?

There was recently an argument on the (French) forum about symbols definitions found in the dictionary versus the “intuitive reading” that some Polynesian tattooists are able to do.
The conclusion was that intuition is an essential part in the process of defining someone’s symbols. The dictionary is not intended to replace the intuitive reading. It is supplementary.

“Primitive modern” by Vincent Hocquet (Belgium)

Working preferably in intense black, Vincent manged to give a modern interpretation to traditional ancient designs. He describes his work as “modern primitive”.

Hawaiian octopus in Orange, California

Work in progress. 3 hours thus far, original drawing by Greg at Good Fellas Tattoo in Orange County, California. Started March 30th 2007, hope to complete 4/13/2007. Left calf. Elements of tribal and Hawaiian tattoo in an octopus. Complements my niho mano [shark teeth] and shark armband (I'll look for a pic of that too). Symbolizes my love of the ocean, islander culture, and the many obligations of life, among other things.
 I'll send more pics once its complete.

Filipino sun inside Polynesian half sleeve

Roni already had a Filipino sun on his shoulder. He wanted it to be included inside a Polynesian half sleeve. He had his design done by Jeroen - one of our artists team.

Roni: “Jeroen is a great artist and was very open to designing it the way I wanted. I am satisfied with the design and got it inked on my skin 2 days after. The price was worth it because the design came out exactly like I wanted it and since he designed my tattoo, I think no price is too expensive. I will be sure to have another design done this year”.
